The Witches Of Bunche Beach Preserve: Part III

The birding at Bunche Beach Preserve can be hit or miss from the perspective of what you might be looking for or expecting.

As I've noted in the past, I have never had a disappointing trip to the Preserve while the vast majority of visits lean toward extremely rewarding observations. Images presented in this article were captured on 25 August, 29 August, and 31 August 2012. All were late afternoon visits and had favorably lower tides. The last two trips to the Preserve were focused on the activity at the east channel while I typically favor the west where there is the opportunity to walk or wade through a much larger expanse of flats that the birds will congregate upon. Bald Eagles were observed on 29 August, but were not seen on the latter trip. A highlight of one of the trips was a sunset arrival of a flock of Blue-winged Teal. The highlight of the 31 August trip was meeting up with wildlife master Ken Conger visiting from Virginia. Ken was intent on walking further along the beach to the east than I had ever before. Ken advised me that he heard an eagle on our 31 August visit. The last witch having a curse on Bunche Beach is that of broken glass that appears, on a positive note, very infrequently. I made a visit to the beach earlier in the summer when small pieces of glass littered the beach while removing all that I saw from harms way. Visitor's reviews of Bunche Beach have noted glass here in the more distant past. Walking the beach barefoot is definitely ill advised. It is certainly worth further investigation to find the cause. The pic of Ken is the only one presented from the 31 August trip. Additional wildlife pics from that day will be in the next article.

  1. O Great Kahuna of the SW Avian world,
I am not worthy. Great images as always. Enjoyed our time together. Look forward to our next photo session.
    Blue Skies,
    Ken

    1. Those that are looking for the best beach observations in this immediate area can find them at Bunche Beach Preserve and Little Estero Lagoon. I prefer Bunche when the tide is low. Little Estero is favorable virtually any time. If a future photo session is planned, I would prefer a trip to Bunche.
