Harns Marsh Late Summer 2013: Part I

The prolific rainfall this summer of 2013 had the water level especially high at Harns Marsh Preserve on my 28 August visit to the wildlife venue which I last visited 15 weeks earlier.

The lion's share of images from that day's observations have been superficially reviewed and moderately processed with selected images presented here.

Harns Marsh Preserve remains one of my favorite wildlife venues as it offers great visual and audible entertainment, and an occasional surprise.

The haunting calls of Limpkins could be heard throughout the marsh pre-dawn on this visit and the two following ones that will be part of this series.

Although the visual action at Harns on the 28th offered relatively few birds in numbers overall, there was the surprise of an early observation of Crested Caracara (three in all) that I had not seen at Harns Marsh Preserve in a long while.

Six Sandhill Crane were observed on this day with the birds working the marsh in pairs while hearing their unmistakable calls before the birds were seen.

About 50 swallows were observed of varying size and color with assistance received from Vince McGrath in identifying the Purple Martin that perplexed me. The Barn Swallows most numerous made frequent flybys of me within a few feet of me very low to the ground.

An Osprey worked the deeper water incessantly near the middle of the marsh for a meal as large fish breached the surface of the water directly in front of me numerous times.
