Harns Marsh Preserve: Late Fall Part II

Harns Marsh Preserve on the morning of 11 November was very rewarding in its continued wildlife offerings.

This continuing article documents observations made later in the morning that day. Tree Swallows were not in great numbers as they will be later in the winter months at this venue, but offered a distraction as waves of a half dozen or more flew through with frequency from no distinct direction.

An alligator was observed this day which reminded me the importance of being wary if ever walking into the marsh again which is questionable with the dredging of its perimeter this year.

There was significant interaction between Common Gallinule and American Coot. The chase of the latter seemed to be focused one individual which I am perplexed by.

A brief mating event occurred between a pair of coot while the immature Bald Eagle made frequent passes primarily over the eastern edge of the preserve.

As the action was so prolific this day it would have certainly been helpful to have additional observers to tip off others. In anticipation of meeting up with Chris Baker, I had been practicing my "o'clock" directions.

It was a thoroughly rewarding morning with it reported by Michael Brothers today (13 December 2013) that a Razorbill was found at Flagler Beach. This first sighting of the species in 2013 is six days later than that of last year's unprecedented event.

  2. The moorhen shots are striking!! Also, the American Coots around here are so lethargic compared to these. You really got some great action out of them. Congrats on a stunning set!
