Flight Of The Caracaras And Swallow-tailed Kites

I could not resist yet another visit to Church Road in Hendry County when I was able on 2 March 2014.

Church Road has offered tremendous enjoyment of wildlife observation not only for its bird life but with the possibility for butterflies, dragonflies, and the outside chance of first observation of a Florida Panther as well. At Gate 2 there have been mammal tracks that deserve much scrutiny.

On this particular morning, 14 American White Pelican were observed in flight headed in the direction of Sanibel Island. Several Black-crowned Night-Heron were also seen in the same moment in the heavy fog and low light that made successful photography of these species impossible (though I tried).

Upon arrival to Gate 2 there was a solitary American Kestrel perched on a wire. The kestrel took flight before I was able to get out of the car while this species is extremely skittish. The bird's mate was not observed although should have been in the area.

The Western Kingbird which has been at this location in greater numbers for many weeks since my first investigation, after Tom Wymelenberg's first report, was not seen until mid morning after Tom Obrock had stopped by for observation as well.

A Scissor-tailed flycatcher was not seen for the first time in my visits to this venue which wasn't too great a surprise as their numbers had been dwindling. The trees in the northwest corner of the road and canal offered the roosting of six Crested Caracara which was the backdrop for Savannah Sparrows and a female Painted Bunting.

The flight activity of the caracara and first of season observation of Swallow-tailed Kite is the focus of the images seen in this article. Please see immediately preceding articles of this one for other observation possibilities at this venue at this time of year.

The images in the next article will conclude observations on this day and with luck include additional documentation of a trip within Florida's "Real Florida."
