When making wildlife observations in Florida at this time of year it can be uncomfortable with the heat and humidity, but also may be very rewarding as birds don't cower from the elements including what I believe to be rare foggy conditions in the middle of the Summer season.

On the morning of 23 July, 2014, I made my way to Church Road in Hendry County for my first visit to the venue in more than six months. Arriving a few minutes after sunrise a pair of White-tailed Deer were observed while a third would appear from the tall grass a short while later.

Since the bird activity was surprisingly disappointing visually, I devoted more time to observing the behavior of the deer than I would have otherwise. I walked extensively in approach of bird song only to find the aves for the most part elusive.

It was good to see the species I did before making a drive through La Belle and Alva in search of Red-headed Woodpeckers before heading home. A lone Swallow-tailed Kite was seen in flight above I-75 and Colonial Boulevard this day.
